VHS & 8mm Tape Digitization

VHS & 8mm Tape Digitization

Your Home Movies Shouldn’t Require a VCR or Camcorder

Romero Imaging converts VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, and Digital8 home movies into high-quality digital files you can watch on your computer, phone, tablet, or television — and easily share with family.

Why Digitize

From Rewinding Tapes
to Reliving Memories.

You shouldn’t need to track down a working VCR or camcorder, or fast-forward through an hour of tape, just to watch a home movie. Once your tapes are digitized, the files are easy to watch, copy, organize, and share — and your original tapes are returned to you.

Video Tapes

  • Require aging playback equipment
  • Must be watched in sequence
  • Are difficult to duplicate and share
  • Can become less reliable over time

Digital Files

  • Play on modern devices
  • Are easy to copy and share
  • Can be backed up in multiple locations
  • Keep family videos accessible
Formats Accepted

Six home-movie tape formats.
VHS and 8mm.

The VHS family

VHS

Standard full-size home-video tapes.

S-VHS

Higher-bandwidth Super VHS recordings.

VHS-C

Compact camcorder tapes used with a VHS-C adapter.

The 8mm family

Video8

The original 8mm camcorder tapes, common from the mid-1980s.

Hi8

Higher-resolution 8mm camcorder tapes from the late 1980s and 1990s.

Digital8

Digital recordings made on 8mm-size tapes in Digital8 camcorders.

Which tape do I have?

FAQ

Common questions.

What tape formats do you accept?

VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, and Digital8. 8mm movie film reels and other video formats are not accepted at this time.

Do you digitize 8mm movie film?

Not at this time. We digitize 8mm video tapes — Video8, Hi8, and Digital8 cassettes from camcorders. 8mm movie film (Regular 8 or Super 8 film on open reels, usually silent) requires different equipment and is not currently accepted. If you’re not sure which you have, send us a photo and we’ll tell you.

How long is a typical 8mm tape?

Most Video8 and Hi8 camcorder tapes hold up to 2 hours at standard speed, or up to 4 hours in long-play (LP). The same cassette recorded in Digital8 holds about 60–90 minutes. Whatever the length, every 8mm tape is one flat price. VHS-C tapes are shorter, usually 20–45 minutes.

My tape says “120” or “LP.” What will it cost?

“120” is the tape’s length in minutes at standard speed; long-play (LP) recordings hold twice as much. For 8mm tapes (Video8, Hi8, and Digital8) it doesn’t matter — every 8mm tape is one flat price, any length. For VHS, S-VHS, and VHS-C, recordings beyond the included time are $12.00 per additional hour, and we confirm the length before work begins.

Does it matter which camcorder recorded my 8mm tapes?

No. Video8, Hi8, and Digital8 tapes recorded on Sony, Canon, Samsung, and other 8mm camcorders all play on our equipment. If a tape cannot be played, we will let you know before going further.

Can you digitize tapes recorded outside the United States?

We currently accept NTSC-format videotapes only. If your tapes were recorded outside the United States, please contact us before ordering so we can confirm compatibility.

What will I receive?

One clearly named MP4 file per tape, delivered digitally or transferred to customer-provided storage.

Will I get my original tapes back?

Yes. Every original tape is returned to you after digitization.

Can I watch the files on my phone or television?

Yes. MP4 files play on modern computers, phones, tablets, and televisions.

What happens if a tape is blank or cannot be played?

We will let you know before proceeding so you can decide how you’d like to handle that tape.

Can you repair a broken or damaged tape?

In some cases. We will contact you before performing any separately priced repair work.

Do you improve or enhance the video?

Standard digitization includes a basic beginning and ending trim, an audio/video sync check, and a visual quality review — not enhancement. Extensive editing is available separately and requires your approval.

Can you digitize commercial movies or television recordings?

Romero Imaging digitizes customer-owned home movies and other material you are authorized to reproduce. We cannot duplicate commercially copyrighted recordings.

How are large collections priced?

Per-tape pricing applies, with volume discounts at 10–24 tapes (10% off) and 25 or more tapes (15% off). Mixed VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, and Digital8 tapes count together toward your discount tier.
