Our Philosophy

Why We Created These Guides

Preservation begins with education

Families come to us every week with photographs they haven't looked at in decades. Sometimes the damage is minor. Sometimes it's significant. In almost every case, the most important thing we can offer — before any work begins — is clarity about what is actually possible.

These guides exist because an informed family makes better decisions. They understand the difference between a cosmetic touch-up and a true archival restoration. They know why camera digitization captures detail that a flatbed scanner cannot. They arrive at the estimate conversation with a realistic picture of the process — and realistic expectations for the result.

Technology assists. Human judgment decides.

The tools available to preservation specialists today are remarkable. AI can accelerate the repair of certain damage patterns with a precision that would have taken hours just a few years ago. But no algorithm can decide what a face looked like before it faded. No model can judge whether a shadow is damage or history.

Every guide we publish reflects this philosophy: technology is a capable assistant, but the decisions that matter most — the ones that determine whether a restoration respects the original or overwrites it — remain human ones. These guides introduce you to that process honestly.
