Step 2: Choose the Right File Format

For archival purposes, TIFF files are the right choice. They are uncompressed and retain every detail from the original scan. JPEG is fine for sharing or web use, but compression degrades quality each time the file is saved — it should never be your only copy. Step 3: Organize and Back Up

Create a clear folder structure (by decade or family name works well) and back up your files in at least three places: your computer, an external hard drive, and cloud storage.
